GRETA JOAN ELLISON FLEMING
December 04, 2025
POUND, VA – Greta Joan Ellison Fleming, 86, departed her earthly home on Sunday November 30, 2025, for her heavenly home.
Joan was born August 23, 1939, in the Mill Creek area of Pound, VA, the firstborn child of Alphus and Chloe (Gentry) Ellison. When Joan was about 6 years old her daddy bought a house in Shockey Hollow and that where Joan lived the remainder of her life. Joan had a lifelong love of books, from the time she was able to read and was always ready to discuss books. Joan loved her community of Pound, VA and served almost her entire career in Pound as the Clerk/Treasurer for the Town of Pound. Joan also worked for about a decade at the Wise ARH Hospital in many capacities including dietary supervisor. Joan would say she still had nightmares about working in that non airconditioned kitchen in the summer. After her retirement from the town Joan was inclined to run for and serve in a different position as a council member in Pound.
Joan made a profession of faith and was baptized with her daughters in 1975, and her faith in Jesus was the foundation for her life. Then Joan told her family, friends and everyone to trust in Jesus and keep the faith. Joan had many roles, but none was as special as Nanny and bonus grandmother to so many children and families. Joan was blessed with bonus family from Pennsylvania, Frank and Rachel Jeffrey and their children Frankie and Autumn Jeffery. Joan was very active in the Pound Chapter 67 Order of the Eastern Star until her health prohibited her participation.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents Alphus and Chloe Gentry Ellison, infant brother Gerald Lee Ellison, brother Larry Ellison, niece Alpha Denise Taylor, nephew Ray Ellison, sister-in-law Elsie Ellison and brother-in-law Henry Taylor.
Joan is survived by her daughters Kelly Fleming Jessee and Amy Fleming Mullins and husband Spencer, grandson Justin Jesse and companion Samantha Mullins, great-grandson Asher Jessee and great-granddaughter Sadie Sargent, brothers David Barry Ellison and Milton Ellison and wife Carolyn, sister Cheri Taylor, several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and many lifelong friends and neighbors.
Memorial services were conducted at 7:00 pm Tuesday December 2, 2025 in the Baker Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Tommy Shell officiating. The family received friends from 4:00 pm until time of services.
A healthy Wise County requires great community news.
