Wise, VA - Tommy Joe McAmis, 71, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 22, 2025, at Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee, surrounded by his loving family.
Tommy was the beloved son of Creed Donald “Skeeter” McAmis and Bobbie Jean Miller McAmis.
A proud graduate of J.J. Kelly High School, Tommy entered the coal industry shortly thereafter, where he forged a remarkable career through hard work, integrity, and determination. For over 53 years, he played a vital role alongside Jerry Wharton, contributing significantly to the success of well-known companies such as A&G Coal and JW Construction. In addition to his longstanding partnership, Tommy was also the owner and operator of TMAC Construction, where his leadership and work ethic earned the respect of colleagues and community members alike.
Tommy’s dedication extended far beyond the job site. His influence was felt by all who had the privilege of working with him, and his commitment to his community left a lasting legacy that will not be forgotten.
On September 23, 1972, Tommy married his high school sweetheart, Denese Gayle McAmis. Together they shared 53 wonderful years of marriage, filled with faith, love, and family.
Tommy was a devoted man of God, serving as both Pastor and Associate Pastor at Mount Olive Church. He was a faithful pillar of the congregation for over 42 years, known for his humor, compassion, and generosity. His legacy of service and kindness will long be remembered by all who knew him.
Tommy was preceded in death by his father, Creed “Skeeter” McAmis.
He is survived by his loving wife, Denese Gayle McAmis; his mother, Bobbie Jean Miller McAmis; 3 children, Bobbi Marie McAmis Mullins and husband Jason, Tommy Joe McAmis Jr. and wife Rosiland, and Angela Donnielle McAmis Duncan and husband Aaron; 7 grandchildren, Dalton Jason Mullins, Logan Matthew Mullins and wife, Tellie, Tommy Isaiah McAmis and wife Kaitie, Hannah Blake McAmis, Emmah Kate McAmis, Rylee Grace Duncan, and Laura Abigail Duncan; and one great-grandchild, Brentley James Bolling. An honorary brother and lifetime friend, Jerry Wayne Wharton, and his wife, Melissa.
Visitation for Tommy Joe McAmis will be held on Thursday, September 25, 2025 from 3:00 P.M. - 7:00 P.M. at Mount Olive Church, followed by a memorial service at 7:00 P.M. There will be an extended visitation following the service. Friends may also gather at the church on Friday, September 26, 2025 from 11:00 A.M.–12:00 P.M., after which a graveside service will take place at Robinson-Wilson Cemetery on Pole Bridge. The pallbearers for the service will be the grandkids and honorary brother Jerry Wharton.
