SHELBIE REED

Shelbie Jean Bates Reed, 82, of Coeburn, VA passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, at the Pikeville Medical Center in Pikeville, Kentucky where she was surrounded by family. 

Shelbie was the youngest daughter of Pearlie H. Bates, Sr. and Virgie Nettie Osborne Bates who both preceded her in death.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Jack Reed, Jr; her son, Jackie Reed; her great-great grandson, Zane Liam Mayer; six brothers and three sisters. 

Surviving are her son, Kim David Reed, of Coeburn, VA; her daughter, Rebecca Reed Stidham, of Kansas City, MO; granddaughter Denise Carol and husband Joel Mayer and their three sons, Christopher, Nathaniel and Benjamin all of Kansas City, MO; granddaughter Melissa Anne and her husband Richard Smith of Hereford, AZ and their two sons, Trevor of Joint Base McGuire-Dix, Lakehurst, NJ and Alek of Hereford, AZ. She also leaves behind three great-great grandchildren, Declyn, Lena and Rowan Mayer, all of Kansas City, MO; a brother, Franklin D. Bates of Lampasas, TX and several nieces and nephews. 

Shelbie loved to garden, cook and especially bake. She loved people and left behind some very close friends. Our deepest thanks to all those who held her up in prayer.

She was employed by the Wise County School District and the Norton City School District from which she retired. She was a caregiver for several people whom she loved like family. 

Shelbie’s final resting place is the Greenwood Memorial Cemetery in Coeburn, VA with arrangements made by Sturgill Funeral Home.
