    The Town of Wise is accepting applications for the position of Police Officer. This position is responsible for performing general police duties that ensure the safety, security, and order of the community. Duties are performed on an assigned shift under the supervision of a commanding officer and in accordance with established laws, procedures, and departmental policies.

  Minimum Requirements:  Must be at least 18 years of age, possess a high school diploma or GED, a valid driver’s license, and must meet all minimum standards set by the State of Virginia for law enforcement officers (VA Code §15.2-1705), policies of the Department of Criminal Justice Services, and all other standards and policies of the Town of Wise and the Wise Police Department.  Also, must have the ability to pass a written exam, oral review panel, physical agility test, drug screening, medical exam and thorough background investigation and the ability to complete all statutory and academy training requirements.

    Preferred Qualifications:  An Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice or a related field, law enforcement certification, knowledge of law enforcement practices, investigative techniques, and juvenile counseling, the ability to interact professionally and effectively with the public, juveniles, and other agencies, strong written and oral communication skills and physical stamina and skill in the use of firearms and law enforcement equipment.

     Duties Include (but are not limited to):  Enforcing local, state, and federal laws, conducting investigations and writing reports, performing traffic enforcement and accident response, responding to calls for service, engaging in community policing and outreach, testifying in court as needed, and maintaining accurate records and preparing documentation.
