GARY DARNELL

NORTON, VA - Gary Darnell, devoted husband, father, and amazing grandfather passed away peacefully at his home on May 8th, 2025, age 72.

He is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Dawn and Brandon Roller, Bristol, TN; son and daughter-in-law, Cory and Victoria (Torre) Darnell, Big Stone Gap, VA; grandson, Tate Roller, Bristol, TN; granddaughter Charlotte Darnell, Big Stone Gap, VA; sisters Nancy Darnell and Judy Lawson, and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his dear wife, Cheryl Darnell, who he loved with all his heart; his parents Ralph and Virginia Darnell, brothers and sisters- Louise Boggs. Richard Darnell, Lynn Darnell, Terry Darnell, and Dennis Darnell.

Better known as “Doorknob” he worked as a blaster for several coal companies throughout his 40-year career before retiring to the Lee County country. Gary was a very skilled and hard-working man and was a jack of all trades. If it was broken, he could fix it.

He loved his family and dedicated his life to providing for them. He was a proud parent and even prouder grandpa. Gary was a man of quite strength and dignity. He was quick witted and knowledgeable. He could be strong willed and strong worded, but under that beard laid a heart of gold for those he loved. His loss leaves a big void in this world.

The family received friends from 5-7 pm on Thursday, May 15th, 2025 at Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton, VA.
