SALLIE CAROL PERRY

June 22, 2023

On June 21, 2023, our family’s world was forever changed by the loss of our devoted matriarch. Our mother, Sallie Carol (Bond) Perry, known by all as Carol was born to Elbert “Rusty” and Margaret Bond on February 21, 1938 in Coeburn, Virginia where she spent her childhood growing up alongside her brother, Carson “Boy” Bond, and where she also met our dad, David C. Perry. Mom and Dad married in 1957, spent 20 years with the USAF where they moved around the country, spent time in Germany while raising three of their children (Sharon, Chris, and Leslie). These were some of the best days of her life, she truly enjoyed sharing with her family and friends (or anyone who would listen as she never knew a stranger) the stories of their time in the military. After Dad’s retirement they moved back home to the SWVA mountains they knew and loved. They added one more to their family with their surprise fourth child (Margaret) and over the next several decades they raised their children, helped raise their grandchildren (Lil’ Robert, Shannon, Scott, Brooke, Eric, Tiffany, and Jacob), served and loved their community, and enjoyed their lives in their small town. In their later years, they enjoyed their family gatherings with their kids, grandchildren, and great and great-great grandchildren (Kaleigh, Briana, Steven, Nolan, Abigail, Breccan, Shaylee, Noah, Brittany, James, Samuel, Thomas, Pacey and Joey). There was nothing that brought Mom more joy than knowing her family was healthy, happy, and loved. She was grateful that her family had excellent partners (Joe, Kathy, Robert, and Eddie) that also appreciated, loved and spoiled her every chance they had.

There was nothing she loved more than her family, but she did love a cup of hot tea, eating tacos/fried oysters/crab legs, reading a good book, embroidering, music by Gene Autry/Mac Wiseman/Charlie Pride and hearing Daddy play and sing, talking for hours on the phone with her friends/family, her evenings at the Eastern Star, admiring a beautiful white snow, sharing canning season with family, and well…there was always Alex Trebek and dessert, these were her all-time favorites. She never turned down dessert or missed an episode of Jeopardy. (And the whole family knew not to call during Jeopardy) There were not many things she didn’t like, which was one of the most endearing things about her. She was always humble and grateful for all things, but do not put ice in her drink.

Our mother lived a full beautiful life- loving and being loved by so many. She never failed at being an admirable daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. Her greatest gift to us is her undying love for us. She carried this family with grace and so much love, never complaining or failing to be there for us when called upon. To say that she will be missed greatly is an understatement. Our mother was unselfish to a fault, often and always neglecting the needs of herself for the needs and well-being of this family.

At her request, in her final wishes her services will be conducted on Saturday, June 24, 2023, at Mary’s Chapel Church officiated by Pastor Marty Puckett. Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. with her funeral service immediately following. The graveside services will then be conducted at Greenwood Acres Cemetery. (Sturgill’s Funeral Home of Coeburn, VA will be providing services.)
