DAVID WAYNE JARVIS

David Wayne "Dave" Jarvis, (66), of Wise, Virginia, loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and devoted husband to the love of his life and best friend, peacefully left this world and went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, January 5, 2023, after courageously battling metastatic small cell lung cancer for seven months.
Dave graduated from North High School, Eastlake, Ohio, in 1974. Immediately after completing High School, he began pursuing his lifelong dream of a career serving his Country and Community by enlisting in the U.S. Army. He proudly served his Country from 1974 to 1980. He was honorably discharged, from Fort Eustis, Virginia, as a Military Police Sergeant. After completing his duty to his Country, he initially re-located to Scott County, Virginia.
While residing in Scott County (during the early 1980's), Dave was a founding member of the Scott County Life Saving Crew, Dungannon Unit. He was the first Cardiac Tech ever certified in Scott County, Virginia, and was recognized by then Governor of Virginia, Doug Wilder, as an "Outstanding Citizen of the Commonwealth of Virginia".
He became employed, in 1981, as a Patrol Officer with the City of Norton Virginia Police Department. Working his way through the ranks, he was promoted to Sergeant/lnvestigator.
While in Law Enforcement, Dave assumed many roles; he served as a DARE (Drug Awareness Resistant Education) Instructor, a Defensive Tactics Instructor, a Firearms Instructor, Certified Scuba Diver specializing in Underwater Rescue, and was a Certified Drug Dog Handler. His characteristic of "putting others before self" was often seen on Holidays; as he would volunteer to answer 911 calls enabling the dispatchers to spend the Holidays with their own families.
During his tenure in law enforcement, he was also, for specific purposes and circumstances, sworn-in as a U.S. Marshall and a Special Agent with the Virginia State Police. He spoke with pride of his career in Law Enforcement; but, would always say his last 9 years on the job were his favorite when he was sworn-in as an undercover officer with the Southwest Virginia Regional Drug Task Force.
Due to an on-set of tonsil cancer, Dave regrettably had to retire early in 2004. After receiving a medical diagnosis of being cancer-free, he was appointed to the Southwest Virginia Cancer Center's Board of Directors and proudly served a 4 year term. Dave relocated to the City of Norton in the late 1980's. In addition to serving as a Police Officer, Dave was a volunteer Fire Fighter, a Life Member of the Norton Rescue Squad and an Emergency Medical Technician. Following Retirement, Dave continued to actively serve his community. He served as Post Commander of the Keith Maggard VFW Post 4301 Norton, VA from 2016 until date of his death. He was extremely proud to have been an active member of the Vietnam Veterans Association and the Korean War Veterans Association. He also served as Treasurer and Adjutant of The Darrell “Powers” American Legion Post 243. As Adjutant for Chapter 56 of the Disabled American Veterans, Dave was also a member of DAV Auxiliary Unit 56, a member of the Vietnam Veterans Association, and the Korean War Veterans Association.
Dave enjoyed photography (especially photographing his family), target shooting and anything electronic or computer related. He also spent much of his time woodworking and making furniture, display cases and various other items for his family members. Dave was truly "a jack of all trades". He was a true man; "what you saw was what you got". He was the type of man who "ate hamburger so his family could eat steak'. He would help anyone in need and never failed his family. While serving in law enforcement, Dave earned numerous awards and acclamations which revealed his outstanding commitment to "serve and protect" his Community; including saving the life of a woman choking at Western Steer, saving the lives of two drowning children (one at the City of Norton Swimming Pool and one in the Guest River). Dave was always proud of his job and the work he'd done but was never one to seek attention; he did not like "being in the spotlight and would rather stay behind the scenes". Dave avoided confrontation at all costs; however, he was a man who "wore his heart on his sleeve", he had a great affection for and felt he had a responsibility for all children, he was a caring, compassionate, understanding and seemed to have an inner link to those less fortunate than himself, especially the homeless and Veterans. More than once, Dave would ask for a "to go box" at a restaurant, not to take his leftovers home for the next day, but to drop them off to someone he knew had less than he. He was truly one of a kind!
Dave came to know and love the Lord Jesus Christ as an adult. Dave was saved by God's grace and prayed often; he rarely read the Bible but he 'walked and talked to the Lord' specifically for guidance and peace for his family.
Dave was preceded in death by his father, James "Jim" Lester Jarvis, Sr.: his brother, James Lester "Jimmy" Jarvis, Jr.; his maternal grandparents, Florence and William Brinager; his paternal grandparents, Clarissa Thompson Jarvis and Claude Jarvis; his mother and father-in-law, Florence and Woodrow Adams; sister-in-law, Gayle Adams Kilgore and brothers-in-law, James Woodrow Adams and David Lee "DL" Adams.
