JAMIE TODD MCCOY

August 29, 2022

Jamie Todd McCoy, 47, of St. Paul, left his earthly body to be present with the Lord on Sunday, August 28, 2022. He was at home surrounded by family and friends who supported him during his two-year battle with nasopharyngeal cancer.

He was born on September 28, 1974, in Aurora, Illinois to Paul and Denise Brummel McCoy, both of whom preceded him in death. Also, preceding him in death are his mother-in-law, Sheila Mitchell; brother-in-law, Timothy McCoy; and two special friends, James Wolff and Michael Deal.

Jamie was a faithful servant of the Lord, baptized in the Christian faith. His faith in the Lord never wavered, even during his two-year cancer battle. He never questioned, doubted, or was angered by his diagnosis. The motto by which he faced his cancer journey was “God’s got this!” It was this faith that allowed him to keep such an unbreakable spirit even at the most challenging times.

Jamie moved from Illinois at an early age and grew up in Nora, Virginia where he and his cousins shared the kind of relationship that usually only siblings share. Jamie attended Ervinton High school until his junior year. Many years later he obtained his GED. It was in Virginia where he met the love of his life Joni, and soon after married. They then started their own family. Soon after, they relocated to Hickory, N.C. to be closer to Jamie’s family.

While in North Carolina, Jamie became very involved with the community, particularly in activities that included his children. He volunteered at their elementary school for a program called “Watch D.O.G.S” which meant he went to the school on certain days of the week to help provide extra security by making rounds through the building throughout the day. He would also help in classes where assigned, doing anything from sorting papers to helping children read.

He was a card-carrying member of Girl Scout troop 687, affectionately referred to as a “do-dad”. He would do anything to help the troop. You could be sure to see him lugging around cases of cookies during cookie season, teaching outdoor cooking skills, or even helping clean up the park in a joint effort with his Cub Scout Pack.

Jamie became involved in his son’s Cub Scout Pack first as an assistant to the den leader and later became assistant Pack leader for Pack 240 in Hickory, N.C. There they bonded through many shared experiences including camping, hiking, fishing, and pinewood derbies. There he also formed many lifelong friendships with other parents. During a scouting event, he met a local firefighter, which sparked his interest in joining the local volunteer fire department. During his tenure with the St. Stephens volunteer fire department, he became involved with their explorer program mentoring teen firefighters in training. He was an active member of the fire department for just shy of a decade. While an active-duty member, Jamie received the “Firefighter of the Year” award in 2012.

Before his illness, Jamie acted as a personal caregiver for his friend, James Wolff, while he battled cancer so he could spend his final months on earth at home on hospice surrounded by family and friends. He also made sure to donate blood whenever possible.

He is survived by his loving wife of 27 years, Joni McCoy; one son, Austin Tyler McCoy, and fiancé Crystal Hamilton of St. Paul; two daughters, Destiny Lorelle Clingaman and husband, Jacob of Peru, IN and Lynleigh Nicole McCoy, of the home; one grandson, Oliver Remus McCoy and a second grandchild on the way; two brothers, Paul McCoy and wife, Patricia of Newton, N.C. and Jody McCoy and wife, Katrina of Conover, N.C.; one grandparent, Donna Noble of Yorkville, IL; father-in-law, Carlos Mitchell; sister-in-law, Josette McCoy; brother-in-law, James Mitchell and wife, Leticia; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Interment will follow in the Mitchell-Smith Cemetery, Sandy Ridge Road, St. Paul. Pallbearers will be Justin McCoy, Jessie McCoy, Matthew McCoy, Shawn McCoy, Jacob Clingaman, and Zachary McCoy.
