IRENE UNDERWOOD EDWARDS

Irene Underwood Edwards passed Monday, August 23, 2021, at the age of 96 years, 7 months, and 11 days.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Thomas Hubert Edwards, parents Lewis Thomas and Mary Emmaline Presnell Underwood, brothers Paul “Booty”, Harvey, Lawrence “Curley”, Lank, Carroll “Ked”, and Bill, and sisters Nina, Georgie, Lelia, and Mary Belle.

Born in Exeter, VA, on January 13, 1925, Irene moved with her family to Haymond, KY six months later. She lived in Haymond until 2016, where she was known throughout the community for her cooking, baking, and sense of humor. She spent her remaining years at The Laurels Assisted Living Facility in Wise. In her later years, her grandchildren and nearly everyone else called her Granny.

She is survived by her son, Thomas Wayne Edwards, daughter, Tamra Sorrels Igo & husband Stephen, grandchildren Noel Baker, Russell Edwards, Thomas Sorrels & wife Savannah, John Reece, Carrie Boggs, Brianna Igo, and Shannon Igo, and great-grandchildren Jason Baker, Riley Boggs, Regan Boggs, Rylan Boggs, Blake Reece, and Tristan Bills. She is also survived by a multitude of nieces and nephews, and special friends and caretakers Brenda Mathieson Collins and Lonnie & Sandy Davis, who are all very much appreciated.

Services will be held Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at Powell Valley Memorial Gardens in Big Stone Gap. Allen Culbertson will be officiating. Polly and Craft Funeral Home of Jenkins KY is serving the family.
