MARGARET PRATER

Margaret “Moom” Fugate Prater, 96, of Wise, entered peacefully into the arms of Jesus on Tuesday, December 29, 2020.

Moom was a born again Christian, attending the Wise First Church of God in her early years; and then in her later years, she attended Bethel Chapel until she was unable to attend due to health.

Moom was the owner/operator of Cohen’s Department Store in Norton, Virginia.

Moom was preceded in death by her loving husband, Richard “Dickie” Prater; grandson, Travis Sturgill; her parents, Tate and Pearl Fugate; she was the last surviving child of five siblings, sisters, Reva Wright, Dorothy Elam, Leda Dale, and Tiny Strouth Baker; and brother, William “Bill” Fugate.

Surviving are a son, Ronny Prater and Nancy Osborne; daughter, Patty Sturgill and husband Randy; grandson, Toby Sturgill and wife Tammy; great-grandchildren, Nick Sturgill and wife Jessica, Morganne Helbert and husband Hunter, Eden Sturgill and Steven Bowen, Emily Sturgill, Abi Sturgill and Izzy Sturgill; great-great-grandchildren, Jackson Sturgill, Grayson Sturgill and Baby Helbert, due in June 2021; and a host of other relatives and friends.

All services for Moom were private. Burial was in the Powell Valley Memorial Gardens in Big Stone Gap, VA. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital - 501 St Jude Place Memphis, TN 38105.
