County: 18 new COVID-19 cases within five days

The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Wise County increased by 18 between Aug. 20 and Monday.

The Virginia Department of Health reported Monday morning that the county’s total confirmed cases in the months since the pandemic began had risen to 287 — up from 269 on Aug. 20.

Meanwhile, the health department’s cumulative positive case count for Norton remained at 22 Monday, the same number as of Aug. 20.

Statewide, the total number of confirmed cases across several months rose from 105,289 Aug. 20 to 108,767 Monday, an increase of 3,478.

The number of “probable” cases rose from 4,593 Aug. 20 to 4,863 Monday, an increase of 270.

During the same period, the number of confirmed deaths increased by 41 to 2,352. The number of probable COVID-19 deaths increased by two to 119.
