Library to provide free wi-fi hot spots

August 11, 2020

Lonesome Pine Regional Library has ordered 45 mobile wireless internet hot spots so that cardholders can get free online access at home or on the go.

The project was made possible by a grant through the Institute of Museum and Library Services, using federal CARES Act funds appropriated to help localities and organizations cope with the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a Monday release from the local library system.

“Hotspots are perfect for residents who lack internet access at home, need wi-fi coverage when switching service providers or are going on a trip and want to guarantee access to the internet,” said Jennifer Hall, the library’s IT coordinator.

“We recognize that students, educators, remote workers, entrepreneurs and job searchers often lack broadband access in our area,” said library system Director Julie Short. “We are working diligently to get these devices to our patrons before schools begin or at least shortly thereafter. We felt it important to make this announcement now so families would know this option is coming very soon!”

The Library of Virginia is administering this grant initiative. “Nan Carmack, director of the library development and networking division, is working tirelessly on our behalf,” Short said.

“I look forward to hearing about how Lonesome Pine will be deploying these and about the impact they have for your community,” said State Librarian Sandra Treadway. “This is not a long-term solution but a stop-gap until a nationwide broadband initiative equalizes internet access for all Virginians and Americans. But at least this may help now during this critical time.”

Once the devices are ready for checkout, the library will share the details in another public announcement. Or, patrons may call 328-8325 or their local branch and watch the website, www.lprlibrary.org, for details.
