Lonesome Pine Regional Library launches 1,000 Things Before Kindergarten

Lonesome Pine Regional Library is launching 1,000 Things Before Kindergarten (1KTB4K), a new reading challenge for young children beginning the week of August 24, 2020. This program will be incorporated into our existing Baby Sprouts and Little Pines sessions, but is also open to all children from birth through age 5 years.

“The library is excited to help your child get ready for kindergarten,” says Julie Short, Library Director. “We understand that parents are searching for the learning environment that best meets their child’s needs in this challenging health environment. We are pleased to provide an option in which parents can remain with their child as they prepare for kindergarten. Our curriculum will include counting, singing, measuring, concept learning, and books…lots of books. And, for those families who aren’t quite ready to venture out, the library will offer virtual sessions as well.”

1KTB4K will take anywhere from a few months to a few years to complete. It is a self-paced activity of reading and learning with your child. Completion will depend on how often you and your child read together and complete activities. Karen Ponish, Programming Coordinator, explains, “Studies have shown that families who start reading aloud to their children at birth help to strengthen their language skills and build vocabulary - two important skills needed to be successful in school and life! For every 100 books read, children will receive a special prize. When they reach 1,000 books they will receive a medal and an invitation to a special celebration of readers.” The program is provided in partnership with the Library of Virginia, the Soho Center, and is funded in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

As our preschool programs begin, the library will implement additional safety measures. Each child will be provided with his/her own materials, such as crayons, glue, scissors, etc. Class sizes will be smaller but there will be more classes offered and the parent or adult caregiver will stay with each child. The programming area will be sanitized after each class. Your child’s safety is our upmost concern.

We hope that you and your child will join us in this reading adventure.

Registration begins on August 10, 2020. Call your local library for dates and times.
