Phase three reopening might start this week

June 23, 2020

Phase three of Virginia’s reopening process could begin as soon as this week, Gov. Ralph Northam said Thursday.

The number of active COVID-19 cases in Virginia continues to trend downward, the governor said, and hospital bed capacity is stable.

Phase three will include continued recommendations for physical distancing, working from home if possible and wearing face coverings in indoor public settings, according to a press release.

The maximum number of people allowed in social gatherings will increase from 50 to 250.

Businesses are cautioned to continue maintaining physical distance guidelines, frequently clean and sanitize high-contact surfaces and take other enhanced safety actions.

Restaurants and beverage businesses will continue to be required to maintain six feet between tables. Fitness centers will be able to operate at 75 percent capacity. Recreation and entertainment venues will be able to operate at half-capacity. Swimming pools will be able to expand operations to free swim in addition to exercise, diving and instruction.

Overnight summer camps will remain closed.
