Syrup production school offered
The second annual Southwest Virginia Tree Syrup School will be offered at the Oxbow Center in St. Paul on Saturday, Nov. 23, with registration beginning at 9 a.m.
Classes will be of interest to both beginning and experienced syrup producers. Hobbyists and commercial producers are encouraged to attend. The featured speaker at this year’s event will be Mike Rechlin, author of Maple Syrup: An Introduction to the Science of a Forest Treasure. Missy Moyers-Jarrells of Laurel Fork Sapsuckers Sugar Camp in Highland County will also present, as will speakers from Virginia Tech and Appalachian Sustainable Development.
An optional Friday afternoon tour of a maple operation in Pound will be offered this year as part of the event.
Registration is $15 per adult or $10 per child by Nov. 15. Register in person at the Virginia Cooperative Extension office in Wise or online at https://register.ext.vt.edu/ . Click on “Programs” and then “Agriculture” to find it in the list.
