JAMES ELBERT ‘EBB’ STURGILL SR.

James Elbert “Ebb” Sturgill Sr., 98, of Wise, passed away Thursday, October 17, 2019 at the Norton Community Hospital in Norton.

He was of the Baptist faith, truly loving the Lord and his family. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII where he earned two bronze stars, a retired coal miner of Old Ben Coal Company, was a member of UMWA and was Past Master and member of the Wise Masonic Lodge Hoge #8 A.F. & A.M.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Helen “Dopey” G. Sturgill; and their son, James “Jim” E. Sturgill Jr.

Surviving are his daughter-in-law, Sue Sturgill of Bean Station, TN; three grandchildren, Shayne Sturgill and wife Marilyn of Bean Station, Lori Stidham and husband Carl of Elko, NV and Chad Sturgill and fiancé Alyson Smith of Stuart, FL; six great-grandchildren, Kendra Gates and her friend Dustin McCoig, Joshua Franse, Dalton Stidham and his friend Sarah Moore, Dillion Stidham and wife Chelsea, Dawson Sturgill and Ashlyn Sturgill; four great-great-grandchildren, Candace Gates, Lucas Gates, Devyn Stidham and Dylan Stidham; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Masonic services for James Elbert “Ebb” Sturgill Sr. will be conducted at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 22 at the Sturgill Funeral Home chapel in Wise. Funeral services will follow with Pastor Cliff Bowman and Pastor Larry Moll officiating. Family will receive friends from 5:30 p.m. until time of services at 7 p.m. Graveside committal services and burial with Military Rites will be held at 12 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 23 in the Wise Cemetery. Family and friends will meet at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home to go to the cemetery in procession.

In lieu of flowers, family requests that memorial contributions to be made to Stevens Church of God – P.O. Box 3096, Wise, VA.
