The last time a high school varsity football team played at Riggs Stadium in Appalachia was when the Bulldogs of former Appalachia High School, above left suited up in 2010. The biggest rival for Appalachia was the former Powell Valley High School, above right. In 2011 the Appalachia and Powell Valley were consolidated to form Union High School. Union officials have announced that this year in celebration of both Appalachia and Powell Valley winning state football championships in 1989 the Union Bears will play a home game against Sullivan North (Tenn.) on Sept. 12 at Riggs Stadium. The game is one of six home games for the Bears.
