From about 1900-1915 Cumberland Express Company sat atop Pound Gap and was a ‘way’ station to help people and goods get over the mountain at this point on the Fincastle Turnpike. Devil John Wright stands on the porch wearing a white hat, second from the right end. His horse with unidentified rider stands in front of the carriage and its horses. Today turkeys still wander along this hillside, much as the ones in this picture. (From the Photo Archives of the Historical Society of the Pound.)
