CHALLENGER: Ed Gillespie Gillespie, a Republican, is a founding partner in a lobbying firm. Gillespie, 53, served as counselor to President George W. Bush from mid-2007 to early 2009. Gillespie was chairman of the Republican Party of Virginia from late 2006 to mid-2007. He chaired the Republican National Committee from mid-2003 to early 2005. He served as a political and campaign strategist and/or spokesman to numerous Republican elected officials and candidates since the early 1990s. Gillespie is married and has three children.
