Ridgeview High’s Garrett Owens and freshman Emily McCarty of Clintwood explain a small-scale hydroponic farming model that will be used for construction of a much larger system at the school. The blue tank — which in the working system will be one big enough to hold 250 gallons of water — is where fish are kept. The fishes’ waste matter flows into the bucket-shaped tank, where it is thoroughly mixed with water and flows into the third tank. That nutrient-rich mix will help to grow vegetables. Solar power will recharge the system’s battery.
