Burton High School students Derek Allen, left, and Mazzy Tomko were appointed Monday night as non-voting representatives to Norton School Board. The board took action at its organizational meeting, where it also re-elected Sherry Adams as chairwoman and Mark Leonard as vice chair. Becke Elkins was reappointed as clerk. The idea for student school board representatives came from the Virginia School Boards Association and Superintendent Gina Wohlford introduced it to the board in October. Discussion of student board members was on the VSBA annual conference agenda in November. Norton board members have been enthusiastic about the idea.
