ROGER “SOCK” MULLINS

Roger “Sock” Mullins passed away on Sunday, November 27, 2022, in the comfort of his home after a long battle with prostate cancer.

Roger was born in 1941 to Elzie and Esther Mullins in Pound, Virginia. He was a 1960 graduate of Pound High School where he was a star athlete, having played four varsity sports. He attended the University of Richmond on a basketball scholarship, and later transferred to Pikeville College where he also played basketball. He graduated from Pikeville College in 1964.

After college, Roger began teaching history and later took a position with the US Job Corps program where he served as a director of several Job Corps centers over the years.
He married Victoria Jackson of Pikeville, Kentucky in 1964 and they were happily married for 43 years until she succumbed to cancer in 2007. Roger is probably best known for his involvement in the community and was a fixture at sporting events in Wise County and the surrounding area.
Preceding Roger in death were his parents, Elzie “Sock” Mullins and Esther Mullins of Pound, Virginia and his sister, Betty Dotson of Abingdon, Virginia.

Surviving are his son, Mark Mullins; daughter-in-law, Tricia Mullins; granddaughter, Siobhan Mullins and grandson, Liam Mullins all of Atlanta, Georgia and a longtime companion, Mary Mahan.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Pound Rescue Squad 8316 Main Street, Pound, VA 24279; The University of Virginia’s College at Wise, Office of Advancement 1 College Avenue Wise, VA 24293 or Central High School 5000 Warrior Drive Norton, VA 24273 .

Per Roger’s request there will be no services at this time.
