DOUGLAS (DOUG) LEE ISAAC

Douglas (Doug) Lee lsaac of Willis, VA, formerly of Norton, VA, passed away at age 76 on Friday, January 15, 2021.

He was born on August 30, 1944 in Wise, VA. Doug was a 1962 graduate of John I. Burton High School in Norton a graduate of George Mason University, and held a CPA Certificate.

He was proud of having served in the U.S. Army from 1966-1968, spending a one-year term in Viet Nam during 1967 as a Helicopter Crew Chief. Doug received a citation by direction of the President of the United States, the 1st and 2nd Oak Leaf Clusters, for action displayed in Viet Nam under combat. He actively participated in more than twenty-five aerial missions over hostile territory in support of counterinsurgency operations. He received accolades for his determination to accomplish his mission and for his outstanding degree of professionalism. Doug received an honorable discharge. 

Doug earned his pilot’s license and flew his single engine plane around the countryside. That was a happy time for him - in his plane, looking out over the landscape as it glided beneath him.

He lived in Northern Virginia for many years, where he had a successful career as a CFO for Government Contractors in the DC Metro Area. After retirement, he and his wife moved to the Hillsville, VA area where they owned and ran a deli alongside the Blue Ridge Parkway near Fancy Gap, Virginia. They presented free weekly Blue Grass concerts, performed by talented local bands, on Saturday afternoons which were enjoyed by the people living in the region and travelers from all over the world.

Doug was an avid advocate for the rights and privileges of those in the Special Needs, lntellectually and Developmentally Disabled (l/DD) community. He spoke to state Delegates and Senators on behalf of the l/DD community and was instrumental in bringing highly qualified l/DD Sponsors and Group Homes into the SW Virginia Region.

He was baptized as a youth at his family’s church, East Park Avenue Baptist, Norton. At the time of his passing, he was an active participant at Buffalo Mountain Presbyterian (Rock) Church USA, in Willis. 

Doug was preceded in death by his parents, Mary Magdalene (Maggie) Kilgore lsaac and George Kenneth Isaac Sr. of Norton.

Surviving are his wife of 31 years, Charlotte Barkley; his son Douglas Kline lsaac of Hillsville; his daughter Mary Susan (Susie) Isaac of Knoxville, TN; his brother G. Kenneth lsaac Jr. (Pat) of Palm Coast, FL; his sister Mary Jane lsaac of Wise; and much-loved nieces and nephews as well as his step-son Stephen Oliver (Brenda) of Ocoee, FL; his step-granddaughters Kelly O. Littlejohn (Jason) and family of Temple Terrace, FL, and Cynthia (Cindy) O. Geckas (Eric) and family of Frederick, CO. 

Due to COVID-19, visitation will not be possible. The family will hold a Celebration of Life at a later date, when gathering becomes safe once more.
