Charles Darrell Smith, 72, of Pound, entered into eternity Monday, March 30, 2020 from his home after a brave and courageous battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his loving family.

Darrell was a Christian and attended Pyles Memorial Freewill Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the United States Army having served during the Vietnam war and a proud member of the Pound VFW Post 9600.

Darrell was a retired coal miner with 44 years of experience. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend to all that knew him. He was a jack of all trades and enjoyed carpentry work, his cars and trucks, taking part in military funerals, going to church and helping others. Darrell loved spending time with his family, especially during the holidays. He was an example of what a husband should be, always caring for and protecting Darlene. His love for her never wavered through the good times or the tough ones. 

Darrell is preceded in death by his parents, Charles Lloyd Smith and Ruby Lee (Holcomb) Mullins.

Survivors include his wife and love of his life of 50 years Darlene Smith of Pound; a son, Jeffrey Scott Smith and wife Angela of Pound; grandchildren, Westley Jordan Smith and companion Allie Mullins of Bean Station, TN and Maddison Leann Smith of Pound; great-grandchildren, Kadence Ryan Smith and Finnley Reed Smith; sisters, Patricia Clay and husband Jim of Wise, Dana Hubbard and husband Jimmie of Mooresburg, TN., Debbie Large and husband David of Wise; brothers, William Chris Smith and wife Brenda of Big Stone Gap, Thomas Dwayne Gilbert and wife Sherry and Mickey Gilbert and wife Natalie all of Eolia, KY; several nieces, nephews and cousins and a host of friends and loved ones.

Private funeral services for the immediate family were conducted at 7 p.m. Wednesday April 1 in the Baker Funeral Home chapel with Reverend Troy Belcher, Reverend Randy Carter and Reverend Jimmie Hubbard officiating.

Graveside services were conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday April 2 at the Dewey Memorial Cemetery in Pound where Jeff Smith, Westley Smith, Tommy Gilbert, Mickey Gilbert, Mack Mullins, Chris Smith and Jimmy Hubbard served as pallbearers. Kadence Smith, Finnely Smith, Greg Long, Derek Long , Shawn Smith and Erik Hubbard served as honorary pallbearers. Pound VFW Post 9600 conducted military graveside services in the parking lot of the funeral home.

 Due to the restrictions set forth by the CDC and Virginia State mandates in regards to CoVid-19, limits have been set on the number of people that can attend a public or private gathering. At this time it is out of the control of either the family or the funeral home and we hope that everyone understands the situation during this time.
