A merchant effort that started in the heart of Big Stone Gap’s downtown is growing.
Eleven businesses are scheduled to take part in the Saturday, Nov. 8 Christmas open house, an event that will give shoppers a first look at gift ideas for the holidays. Open house hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Participating businesses are Vintage on Main, Gilley’s Jewelers, Ball’s TV, L.J. Horton Florist, The Nail Girl, Shear Obsession, Judy’s Hodge Podge, Allen’s Carpet, Rhonda’s Hallmark, the June Tolliver House and the Country Porch.
“They used to do what they called customer appreciation day,” said the Hallmark store’s Rhonda Amburgey, an open house organizer. “This year we’re doing it as a Christmas open house where people can come in . . . to see the first of the Christmas product, and we’ll have specials and different things going on. The merchants will be providing refreshments and things like that for people.”
“A lot of people have forgotten what they’ve got downtown, because they don’t come downtown very often,” Amburgery said. “We’ve got a lot of good retailers. When you compare prices, they can make a good deal, and they can service. Customer service is a big thing.”
“We’re really wanting people to remember this year to shop local. Shop local. Shop local,” Amburgery emphasized. “Shop your community — shop local.”
