Wise County Commonwealth Attorney Chuck Slemp and staff members, state Del. Terry Kilgore, county sheriff’s deputies and Sykes employees helped bag groceries for United Way.
United Way teamed up with Food City to host the tenth annual Celebrity Bagging Event on Nov. 22 in support of its annual fundraising campaign.
According to preliminary reports, the event raised more than $27,000 combined, making this the largest year on record for the event, according to a United Way press release.
The event included Food City stores in Wise, Lebanon and seven other Virginia locations along with nine Tennessee locations and one in Georgia.
Local celebrities from throughout the region volunteered to bag groceries at the participating locations. Shoppers made contributions to the United Way through tips for the celebrity baggers at the checkouts — gathered in collection containers or added to their grocery total.
