BIG STONE GAP — Union’s Justin Barnett spent last week setting and breaking some records. In the Southwest Insurance Relays meet on Wednesday, he threw a 56-3 to set the school record, meet record and personal record, as well as the best throw in the region thus far this year. Barnett also won the discus with a throw of 148-8. This is the second-best throw of the season to his earlier throw this season of 150-0.
Avery Jenkins of Union won the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.26. Ridgeview’s Matthew Sexton (11.58) and Nick Phillips (11.68) were just behind him in third and fifth place.
Middlesboro’s Alex Mason won the 200-meter dash with a 23.43. Ridgeview’s Isaac Lockhart was just behind him with a 23.44 and Sexton was third with a 23.65. Burton’s Esau Teasley took fourth with a 24.01 and Tyrell Ingram took fifth with a 24.25. Central’s C.J. Crabtree was just out of the top five with a sixth place finish of 24.71.
Burton’s Najee Steele took the 400-meter dash with a 53.05. Union’s Gary Bishop was fifth with a 56.89.
The Raiders’ Owen Lindsey was victorious in the 800 with a 2:09.03 while Eastside’s Thomas Salyer came in ninth with a 2:23.89.
Dylan Phillips of Abingdon just edged Lindsey in the 1600 with a 4:49.23 to Lindsey’s 4:50.94. Union’s Jacob Mullins was third with a 4:56.61 while Austin Yeary of the Warriors was fourth with 4:57.17.
The Bears’ Nathaniel Hersel won the 3200-meter run with a time of 10:45.78.
Central’s Maddox Reynolds continues his domination of the 110-meter hurdles with a 15.51. Union’s Zion Mitchell and Trevor Wagner were in second and third places with times of 15.91 and 16.45 respectively.
Reynolds also took the 300-meter hurdles edging Union’s Avery Jenkins by a nose (both times were recoded as 41.82). The Bears’ Mitchell was fourth with a 45.35 and Burton’s Alex Mullins was fifth with 47.20.
Ridgeview won the 4x100 relay with a time of 44.20. Burton’s team came in fourth with a 47.52 and Union was fifth with a 47.76.
The team from Castlewood won the 4x400 relay with a time of 8:45.32. Union was second with a 9:13.16.
In the high jump, Mason Adkins of Lebanon prevailed with 6-0. Avery Jenkins, Mitchell and Antwun Jenkins of Union were third, fourth and fifth.
Middlesboro’s Jabari Kyle won the long jump with a 20-07.00. Avery Jenkins of Union and Steele of Burton tiled for second with a 19-09.
The Raiders’ Steele also took the triple jump with a 41-02.00. Union’s Mitchell was third with a 40-00.50.
Union’s Trevor Wagner was fourth overall in the shot put with a throw of 40-10. Mason Polier of Union was second in the discus toss with a 135-05.
Union was first in the overall team score of 145. Burton came in third with a score of 79. Ridgeview was sixth overall with a score of 44.50. Central came in seventh with a score of 31. Eastside was 17th with a score of .5.
Central’s Hannah Large won the 100-meter dash with a 13.31. Burton’s Akyssa Hollinger was third with a 13.42.
Large was also victorious in the 200-meter dash with a 28.21, just edging teammate Riley Elkins who ran a 29.34.
Cassidy Farley of Abingdon won the 400-meter dash with a 1:04.14. Ridgeview’s Kylie Bostic was fourth overall with a 1:07.15.
Grace Ross of Middlesboro won the 800 with a time of 2:39.33. Bostic of Ridgeview was third with a 2:44.76.
Kelsey Harrington of Virginia High won the 1600 and 3200 with times of 5:10.09 and 10:57.37. Haley Sykes of Ridgeview was third in the 1600 with a 6:26.45. The Wolfpack’s Kaley Sykes was fourth in the 3200 with a 14:02.23.
Burton’s Lydia Blair-James handily defeated the field with a time of 16.82 in the 100-meter hurdles. Madison Yates of Ridgeview came in third with 18.35.
Emily Mays of Abingdon won the 300-meter hurdles with a 50.77. Blair-James was second with a 52.99.
Abingdon won the 4x100 relay with a time of 52.90. Central was second with a 54.87. Burton was fourth with a 56.64. Ridgeview came in fifth with a 57.52.
Castlewood took the girls 4x400 relay with a time of 4:39.90 and the 4x800 with an 11:05.16. Ridgeview was third in the 4x400 with a 4:51.92 and third in the 4x800 with an 11:47.86. Union was fourth in the 4x800 with a 12:06.23.
Union’s Emili Brooks took the high jump with a 4-11. Blair-James of Burton was second with a 4-08. Ridgeview’s Yates was fourth with a 4-04.
Gate City’s Samantha Jerrell took the long jump with a 16-06. Burton’s Hollinger was fourth with a 15-02.
Blair-James of Burton took the triple jump with a 33-04. Ridgeview’s Hailey Pease was fourth with a 29-11. Burton’s Paloma Barongan was fifth with a 29-10.
Gate City’s Riley Houseright took the shot put with a 34-04.50. Union’s Samantha Hampton was second with a 33-01.50. Eastside’s Lyndsi Love was fifth with a 30-04.
Union’s Hampton took the discus with a throw of 105-00.
Abingdon took the team title with a score of 115. Ridgeview came in third with 70 points. Burton was fifth with 64. Central was sixth with 40 points. Union and Castlewood tied for seventh with 39 points.
