The first-ever Pound River Challenge drew an armada of 32 kayakers who navigated a three-mile stretch of the river from here to Dickenson County. Even more turned out to watch the inaugural voyage, including family and friends of the late Danny Hopkins, a Pound native and outdoorsman who loved kayaking, to whose memory the event was dedicated. His nephew Bryan Sturgill put in for the roughly three-hour trip down the river and got send-offs from family members Imogene and Guy Sturgill and Robbie Sturgill, among many others.
