DUFFIELD — The regional jail here was rated to hold 278 inmates when it opened in 2005. On Dec. 17, its population topped 600, according to Maj. George Hembree, the commanding officer. As the population of jail inmates and people awaiting transfer to state Department of Corrections facilities has swelled, the jail has had to double-bunk and triple-bunk inmates, Hembree noted during a tour.
