University of Virginia’s College at Wise students prepare to douse faculty and staff with buckets of ice water on Wednesday. The event was the college’s response to the ALS ice bucket challenge. The national campaign has helped raise $94.3 million in donations for the ALS Association as of Aug. 27. The association reported that it only raised $2.7 million during this same time period — July 29-Aug. 27 — last year. ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s Disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.
