WISE — Council on Tuesday awarded Greg Cross the 2016 Hometown Hero Award. The award is given periodically to recognize exemplary service in the community.
Council recognized Cross for his ongoing work to create and grow the annual Chillin’ and Grillin’ in the Glades barbecue competition.
Mayor Caynor Smith told Cross the award was being presented for “taking the initiative and leading the way. Your extraordinary efforts have inspired not only our town, but our entire community. It’s a dream that you had and a thought that you had and experiences that you had with working with the barbecue festivals that has turned this event in the town of Wise into a worthwhile event, something people look forward to and are proud of, and it has really grown in four short years.”
The fourth annual event will be held July 8-10 in downtown Wise.
Cross thanked both town and council for their support. Without that support, he said the event wouldn’t be possible.
