The Virginia State Bar has revoked the license of an attorney who previously practiced in Norton and Wise County.
Tony Michael Hutchinson’s license was revoked when the bar’s disciplinary board met June 16, according to a bar press release, based on his guilty plea to a felony in U.S. district court.
Hutchinson consented to license revocation, acknowledging that the charges against him are true and he could not successfully defend against them, the release states.
Hutchinson’s address of record is the Wolfe Williams & Rutherford firm in Norton, the bar release noted.
Hutchinson pleaded guilty in May to stealing more than $70,000 from his employer. Accordin]g to the U.S. attorney’s office, he was a bankruptcy attorney who worked for a law firm in Bristol, and after that office closed he worked in the firm’s Kingsport, Tenn. office. Beginning around 2013, Hutchinson began diverting clients’ payments to his personal use, and used the firm’s credit card to pay clients’ filing fees in bankruptcy court.
Hutchinson is scheduled for sentencing Aug. 12.
