An increasing number of residents of the Rome area have been using local emergency rooms in the place of primary care physicians. Out of that trend, Jill Pottinger, M.D. and her husband Jay Pottinger, PA-C, developed MediQuick, 109 Red-mond Rd. in Rome.

Jay Pottinger said that quality primary medical care doesn’t have to be expensive or time-consuming and to that end, MediQuick does not even take insurance.

Our whole goal is to see people quickly, Pottinger said. “We’re typically not going to see people that take a lot of time.

Pottinger spent eight years as a physician’s assistant at the emergency room of the Floyd Medical Center in Rome. His wife, Dr. Jill Pottinger, is still an emergency room physician.

MediQuick charges a simple $50 fee for an office visit. The clinic is fairly bare bones; therefore overhead is extremely low, permitting Pottinger to charge the low fee. “I draw the blood, I give the shots, I do any lab tests,” Pottinger said.

The fee is so comparable to the basic fee that people have to pay out of pocket when they visit their own family physi-cian, that Pottinger said MediQuick gets a lot of people who do have insurance, but want to be able to get in and see a doctor fairly quickly.

“I don’t even have an appointment book,” Pottinger said. A lot of people come in for maintenance purposes.”

In addition to basic examinations, MediQuick is able to treat lacerations and assist with what might be considered minor emergency problems. Pottinger is judicious in ordering tests, ascribing to the medical philosophy that common problems happen com-monly

Pottinger and his office assistant Maria Lemus both speak Spanish making much of Rome’s growing Latino community comfortable walking into the office any time between :00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.
