An Appalachia woman is dead and a Norton man is in custody facing a murder charge after a shooting Thursday night at a business in Wise.
After responding at about 11 p.m. to a report of a possible shooting at Lake Street Storage, Wise police discovered a woman's body and subsequently found suspect Matthew Wesley Tate, 27, at his mother's home, according to Commonwealth Attorney Ron Elkins. Tate surrendered without incident.
Wise Police Chief Tony Bates said officers found Kristina Marie Padilla, 21, of 4314 Fleming Rd, Appalachia, shot to death inside the fence area of the storage facility.
It appears there was an argument between the two and Padilla was shot about 7 times with a 9 mm handgun, Bates said. Padilla was in a vehicle when she was shot, police said.
Elkins said Tate admitted to the shooting of Padilla whom Tate described as his ex-girl friend.
Tate was charged with first degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
Tate is being held in Duffield Regional Jail without bond.
Agencies that assisted in the investigation are Wise County Sheriff’s Office, UVA-Wise Campus Police and Wise Rescue Squad.
Sgt. Jason Taylor is in charge of the investigation.
