The Inaugural “Trail of the Lonesome Pine” 5K is happening this weekend.
Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. and the race starts at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 29.
The race is a kickoff to the 56th season of the “Trail of the Lonesome Pine” outdoor drama. Runners who have signed up in advance will receive a pass to the drama on opening night Friday, June 28.
“Trail” 5K organizer Wes Polly Jr. has hopes that the race will grow each year. “We hope to see a great first turnout but I am sure we’ll learn a lot from the first go and start planning for next year,” said Polly.
The “Trail” 5K is an individual race. The runners will begin at the June Tolliver Playhouse, follow the Greenbelt and finish back at the playhouse on the red carpet. The cost is $15 per runner and proceeds will go toward the drama. Runners will receive medals and other prizes.
Ticket for the race can be purchased through the “Trail of the Lonesome Pine” 5K Facebook page or the day of the race before registration.
