ROSE RIDGE — The stakes were high for the Wolfpack as Gate City came calling last Monday night. Despite being by as many as 10 points, the Lady Blue Devils came out victorious 61-58.
“We did the same thing we did against Abingdon. We let a kid get hot and we didn’t step up and guard her. We had a ten point lead in the fourth quarter in this game in the Abingdon game and we lost them both,” said Ridgeview head coach Donnie Frazier.
“We turned it over a lot. Our press worked. We’ve got to take a look at our substitution pattern and see why we can’t hang on to a ten point lead. But it’s the Mountain 7, we just keep on grinding.
After the Lady Blue Devils and Lady Wolfpack won their remaining conference game last Friday, a coin flip took place to see who would earn the fourth seed and a matchup with John Battle. They split the points evenly, but the Lady Wolfpack won that toss.
Starting the game, Bailey Frazier came up with two quick steals, which the Lady Wolfpack converted into two transition baskets. After one, the score was 17-12.
The Lady Blue Devils charged back in the second and took the lead with one minute left in the half. In a tremendous ending, Ridgeview’s Hannah Dotson went to the foul line and hit one of two. The rebound came back to her outside the arc for a three and the ‘Pack took a 28-25 lead. For the final play, Bailey Frazier buried a three at the buzzer giving Ridgeview a 31-26 lead at halftime.
As Gate City chipped away at the lead in the third, Frazier again hit a three with seconds left to give the Lady Wolfpack a 48-42 lead after three.
Gate City came out and had a 5-0 run to narrow the lead to 48-47 and continued to answer everything Ridgeview threw at them. The Lady Blue Devils finally tied the game at 53-53 with fewer than four minutes to go. Then, they took the lead 58-53 with two minutes left. They never lost it again.
“We’ve got to find ways to get Amber (Taylor) the ball in the paint. We have to find people who are willing to make the bounce pass to the post player. We could have had so many more points tonight. But, we just have to keep going,” coach Frazier said.
