BIG STONE GAP — The Union Lady Bears rallied from two runs down to defeat the Ridgeview Lady Wolfpack Friday night, by a score of 3-2. The victory keeps the Lady Bears one back of the Mountain 7 District leader, the John Battle Lady Trojans. Union now stands at 6-1 in the district race.
Ridgeview coach Kent Grant lamented that his team lost another close game. “Last night we loss to Gate City on a homer in their last at bats,” said Grant. “Last season we won the close games. This was the third game in three days in we have played and Nikole (Counts) pitched. We have to regroup because we have three games next week including Union on Monday.”
The game was as close as expected. The pitchers, Marleigh Duncan for Union and Nikole Counts for Ridgeview, dueled throughout the game.
The Lady Wolfpack got on the scoreboard first with two runs in the second inning behind hits by L.J. Swiney and Lauren Rasnick.
Neither team scored over the next three innings as the pitchers and the team defenses held in check.
The Lady Bears got on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth inning. Brooke Light doubled to start the rally. Emma Duncan brought Light in with a two run home run to straight away center field to tie the score at 2-2.
Marleigh Duncan and the Union defense held the Ridgeview attack scoreless in the top of the seventh despite hits by Brooklyn Frazier and Counts.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Union got a base runner to second base as a result of two walks. Emma Duncan then singled scoring the runner from second to end the game. It was the fourth hit of the game for Emma Duncan.
“Marleigh and Emma Duncan had great games,” said Union head coach Makenzie Cluesman. “It was a good win over a good team tonight. We are gaining in confidence and I believe we all contributed.”
Counts allowed three runs on eight hits and was credited with the loss. The Lady Wolfpack committed only one error in the game. Swiney led Ridgeview with two hits. Hunter Grant, Rasnick, Counts, Bailey Frazier, Brooklyn Frazier each had one hit.
Emma Duncan led the Lady Bears with four hits and drove in all three Union runs. Light had two hits, while Marleigh Duncan and Zoe Brooks had one hit each.
Marleigh Duncan was credited with the win, allowing two run on eight hits. The Lady Bears committed no errors.
