County celebrates two decades of RAM
WISE — County supervisors on June 13 passed a resolution recognizing the 20th year of operation for Remote Area Medical’s annual summer health outreach in Wise County. The event, managed by The Health Wagon and partners, takes place this year June 28-30 at the county fairgrounds. The resolution notes that since 2000, the RAM event has provided 2,139 mammograms, 42,262 general medicine visits for adults, 14,172 eye tests for adults, 988 eye tests with glasses for children, 1,321 dental procedures for children and 21,377 dental procedures for adults.
Historical society gets tax break
WISE — County supervisors on June 13 approved a property tax exemption for the Historical Society of the Pound. The organization qualifies for an exemption under Virginia law pertaining to nonprofits that use property “for religious, charitable, patriotic, historical, benevolent, cultural, or public park and playground purposes.”
Cell site gets permit approval
WISE — County supervisors on June 13 approved a special use permit to put a 320-foot cell tower at the end of Dan Hall Mountain Road in Coeburn. Integrisite and New Cingular Wireless requested the permit on behalf of AT&T. The county planning commission recommended approval, noting, “There are no residences near this site and the land is steep, rocky and mountainous, not suitable for very many uses.”
