SALTVILLE — On Thursday, teams from Region 2D came to compete in the regional wrestling tournament at Northside High School. Despite Burton finishing last and Eastside finishing in sixth, both teams had individuals who made an impact.
Spartan standout Robert Russell earned his 100th victory at the event and came in second place behind Cole Jessee of Castlewood in the 113-pound weight division.
In the 126-pound class, Naomi Torres of J.I. Burton finished in fifth place as she pinned Preston Miller of Chilhowie. Eastside’s Ethan Marshall lost the third place match to Dylan Barrett of Honaker to finish fourth overall.
At 145 pounds, Bryson Shepherd of Eastside was defeated in the third place match by Matthew Riley of Grundy to finish fourth overall.
Owen Lindsey of Burton was victorious over Jacob Mutter of Patrick Henry to come in third overall at 152 pounds.
J.J. Marshall of Eastside won his third place match over Eduardo Elswick of Patrick Henry in the 195-pound weight class division.
Robert Backherms of Eastside came in sixth place in the 285-pound division.
Next up is the Super Regions match at Castlewood on Friday, February 8 and Saturday, February 9.
