WISE — The Spartan boys have won all but one set this season. They continued riding that momentum as the blanked J.I. Burton 9-0 Thursday at the Jim and Betty Humphreys Tennis Complex at UVa-Wise.

“These guys are a really easy team to coach because they push themselves harder than even I could,” said Eastside head coach Alicia Jones. “They want to win. They are often there practicing before I get there and they stay after practice is over.”

The day started off with doubles matches. In the one seed match, Eastside’s John Robert Kilgore and Jordan Rasnick defeated Burton’s Keaton Ingle and Caleb Barnette in straight sets 6-0, 6-1.

In the matchup of the second seeds, the Spartans’ Shane Campbell and Erik Jones were victorious over J.I. Burton’s Austin Quillen and Owen Lindsey 8-0.

In the third seed match, Chris Swann and Luke Kirk defeated Bryson Roberson and Josiah Kyle 8-6.

The singles matches saw Kilgore defeating Ingle 6-0, 6-1; Campbell over Quillen 8-0; Rasnick victorious over Barnette 8-2; Swann defeating Lindsey 8-6; Jones over Roberson 8-4 and Kirk over Kyle 3-1 in a forfeit.

Coach Jones says her senior heavy team is ready to head back to state.

“We know it is a road and we have to take every step. We play one point to the step. But, we just need to keep what we’re doing and pushing,” Jones said.
