At a Thursday afternoon press conference in the Appalachia town hall, Slemp, county Sheriff Ronnie Oakes, several law enforcement officers from around the region as well as officials from the towns of Appalachia and Big Stone Gap, announced that a mass arrest was taking place.

“There are 30 individuals who are wanted for arrest . . . As of 12:30 p.m. we have reports that 15 of the 30 have already been arrested,” reported Slemp.

Slemp explained that the individuals had been recently indicted by a multi-jurisdictional grand jury. There were 35 indictments, with 25 of them being meth-related.

Slemp stated that officers have been working to “infiltrate various criminal networks and disrupt the flow of dangerous drugs to our streets” for the past 15 months.

According to Assistant Sheriff Grant Kilgore, the drugs coming into the region are “of cartel quality” and coming across the southern border.

The alleged offenses took place in Appalachia and Big Stone Gap. Recently, Appalachia residents have been speaking out at council meetings on the issue of drug users and dealers. On Oct. 22, concerned citizens met with Appalachia police and council members and discussed forming a citizen task force.

CLARIFICATION A recent article listed numerous people in the Appalachia and Big Stone Gap area who were arrested last week on various drug charges. They included Joshua S.
